You find a new factory with great pricing and quality.

Sounds good, right?

But then they become slow to respond. Or don’t respond to certain questions.

Initially you overlook these issues, tempted by the sweet, sweet pricing, and proceed to sample and place your purchase order (PO).

But then weeks and months follow of poor communications.

You have no idea what’s going on with your order.

Delays start.

They don’t respond to your QC company or your photographer either.

Things look bleak.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Major takeaway? You need a factory that is cooperative and excels in communication.

Prevention is the key. Improve your decision-making process during the “courting” process by:

– Sending them a bunch of small requests as a test. E.g., asking what compliance certs they have.

– Asking about problem solving scenarios: “If this problem happens, how would you approach it?”

– Requesting for a live or recorded “virtual tour” via WeChat.

– Chatting with them and/or the owner/head of production WeChat. Ideally, do a video call.

– Seeing how they respond to feedback or constructive criticism. Gauge if they are open to making improvements. 

*If you can’t speak Chinese, ask your rep or sourcing agent to attend.

Put them through the communication paces. 

Then ask yourself “Is this a partner I could see myself working with long term?”
